Teutonic belief in right as justice and fairness is one of the foremost Germanic contributions to
civilization as a whole, especially when you see it as the main barrier against Western civilization’s
advance into totalitarianism: the deep-rooted belief that “no one is above the law,” that neither private
people nor the government has the right to step outside the bounds of the legal system for any purpose
and even a king or a president can be brought before the courts if due cause exists.
Related to the question of right and wrong is the dichotomy of weal-working and woe-working.
In cases of magical action, where lawful justice is more difficult to determine, these are the aspects which
must be considered. Simply stated, weal is that which works towards your welfare and the welfare of
others; woe is that which harms yourself and/or others. From this standpoint, there is no excuse for
crusading under the banner of “my enemy is evil and lam good”; instead, you must honestly be able to
say, in a case where you are forced to take action against another, “he/she is causing harm to others and
must be stopped; I am willingly causing woe in hopes that a worse woe may be averted, and I know that I
maybe working my own doom as well.” With further study, you will notice that there is nothing
intrinsically evil in the Germanic legends; only creatures which cause harm and must therefore be slain or
banished. However, the giant kindreds are capable of working weal as well as woe; the gods work woe as
well as weal; and in the sagas and legends we see that the most innocent of acts performed without
forethought may lead to either result.
The nature of runic magic’s effectiveness is such that it should always be handled with the
greatest of care lest you should unwittingly write the doom of yourself or of others, or write woe where
you had meant weal; this will be dealt with more fully later. It should also be remembered that the
common weal is more important than your personal good.
