eath, ond, is the actual spirit, analogous to the Hebrew ruach which means both “soul” and “breath.” As
Lord of the Winds, Odhinn is himself the embodiment of this idea of “spirit” and of all the magical might
within, as his title Galdrfadhir, “father of magical songs,” shows. The highest mastery of the magical
breath is, of course, the magical song which melds the ecstasy of poetic inspiration with the guidance of
power. In the shaper’s trance, one has reached a state in which one can receive the truths of the hidden
thoughts of the world (collective unconscious, also implied by the nature of Mimir’s Well) and transmute
them into forms which show their might in the deepest layers of the hearers’ minds. This is the gift of
Odhinn through the rune ansuz, the gift of the mead Odhroerir, one of the three great roots of Odhinn’s
might.
As well as embodying Odhinn’s powers of inspiration and thought, the rune ansuz also shows the
side of Odhinn’s being which is the Lord of the Wild Hunt, leader of the dead. As the passing soul is
often felt as a breath of wind, the ancient Germanic people also sensed the nearness of restless ghosts in
the stormy autumn and winter nights, knowing the fury (wodh) from which this god takes his name in the
rage of the wild winds. It is thought by most that this is Odhinn’s oldest shape: leader of the horde of
rushing ghosts and embodiment of the might of madness which is shown through his followers as both
poetic inspiration and berserker rage. The rune ansuz is the rune of Odhinn as the lord of life and death
alike: of wrath, wisdom, and mighty words; of the godly melding of greatness and madness.
The rune ansuz is used for creative inspiration and reception of Odhinn’s might. As a rune which works
on the deepest layers of the mind, it brings the ability for magnetic, even hypnotic speech-a power which
can be used for weal and woe alike. The most extreme example of this can be seen in the oratorical
trances of Adolf Hitler, who seemed to have tapped into this might unknowingly and used it to mesmerize
a great part of his nation. (For the interested, H.G. Baynes’ contemporary study, Germany Possessed,
goes into this instance of archetypal/ mythological breakthrough in great detail.)
Ansuz unblocks the channels of self-expression; it can be used to overcome the blockages of body
and mind caused by fear or trauma and to deal with bindings and restraints of every kind.
Through meditation on ansuz and the side of Odhinn’s being which is the Lord of Death, you can
come to a fuller understanding of death and thereby overcome the terrors it holds.
Ansuz is used in all forms of receptive psychic ability and magic. It ought to be called into the
vitki’s own sphere before any act of galdr-magic.
Should you be trusting or fool enough to lend your body to a spirit-being, ansuz could be used for
channeling. This is not, however, a wise thing to do at all, as most of the walkers between the worlds are
no more trustworthy than the average human stranger and frequently less so.
A good stone to use with ansuz is lapis lazuli, which has traditionally been seen as a link between
the human and the godly. The name “lazuli” is derived from the Arabic word for “heaven”-fitting for a
rune so close to the lord of wind and sky. Lapis is said to be a mental and spiritual opener, aiding one in
receiving both the messages of the hidden mind and the inspiration of the gods.
Ansuz: Meditation
You stand in the center of a barren plain. Everything around you is utterly still. Locked into your
stiff stance, you cannot move or breathe; even your heart does not beat. Slowly, a faint breeze begins to
blow around you. As it rises, you hear a deep, wordless singing far away, growing louder as the wind
strengthens.
You see a tall, hooded man in a dark blue cloak gliding swiftly towards you from the north, his
graying beard and dark garments tossed by the might of the blast that moves him along the plain. He stops
before you, his voice mingling with the howling of the wind as he leans forward and begins to chant, his
words ringing through your whole being.
“Sense you have not I soul you possess not / being nor bearing I nor blooming hue. I Sense I
breathe into you I soul I breathe into you I being I breathe in you I and blooming hue.”
With his final words, he breathes a great gust of air into your lungs. It tingles coldly through your
body as your blood begins to flow, loosening the stiffness that had held you bound and filling you with
