you chant:
"Hail to thee, Brightshield! Hail, heaven-bright warder!"
3. Step forward into the circle, moving into Brightshield's place and take up her defensive stance,
merging with her as you do so. You feel the elk-horned helmet on your head, the weight of
shield, sword, and byrnie, and the strength of the great white wings which arch out from your
back. You are created as a defender, shining with holy fire. Your sky-blue eyes see through all
the Nine Worlds; you are ready to meet and overcome any threat. You cry out, hearing your
voice ring through all the realms of being,
"I am Brightshield, heaven-bright warder,
My might shines in shield and sword.
My worth shall throw back all workings of woe,
Where the secret staves I write, shall ward.
Not wight nor witch, not etin nor alf,
Shall withstand the strength of works I wreak.
I am Brightshield, heaven-bright warder!"
4. Set up and proceed with the rite as normal, including the initial drawing of the circle and
creation of the ritual space, as your crossing its bounds broke the first circle. All of this shall be
done in the persona of Brightshield.
5. When the ritual has been completed, including the breaking of the circle and rewrapping of
tools (except gandr or sax, whichever was used in creating Brightshield), draw a second circle
around yourself and assume the original defensive stance of Brightshield. You, the vitki, will
then walk out of Brightshield, leaving her standmg inside the circle. Close the circle behind
you and stand for a moment, being sure that your visualization of the persona inside is clear.
Say,
"I am (your magical name) the vitki. Brightshield, thy work is wrought!"
6. See her slowly dissolving into her component energy, until her form has melted altogether into
rainbow-sparkling golden light within the circle.
7. Break the circle and return the energy to the universe. Alternatively, you may choose to store
each persona in an item of jewelry or ritual dress so that you may assume each one by simply
putting the article on, rather like the way in which one changes shape in seidh-magic.
SILENCE
Silence in preparing for the rite is important because it helps one to focus on the ritual and avoid
dissipating energy. Mundane words and unnecessary actions distract the vitki's mind and weaken his/her
power. in magic, every action must be deliberately willed for a specific effect. In Teutonic magic it is
necessary to go to and from the place at which you perform any magical act in silence, no matter what
you see or who tries to talk to you. This silence should be maintained in all ways when garbing and
setting up the harrow. During the rite no words other than words of magic should be spoken, and you
must be thoroughly silent when cleaning up afterwards and putting one's tools away.
RITUAL GARB
The ritual garb, like the rule of silence, reinforces the fact that everything about a ritual is set apart,
concentrated in power, and willed. Some prefer to work skyclad; however, it is generally thought that
