opening and shutting and sparks of green gleaming from their black eyes. You stab out again and again,
fighting the creatures until the waters around you run black with their blood and your arms and legs burn
with tiredness. Small fish come to begin tearing the corpses apart, followed by larger fish. You dive
quickly before the sharks can reach the scene of the battle. You breathe deep breaths of water, letting its
power flow into you and fill you with life until your new strength shines faintly green in the black depths
of the sea.
At last you come to a great dark wall of underwater rock and the blacker hole of a cave in it. You
swim down the narrow passage for a long time, your arms and legs scraping against the slippery moss that
lines its walls. You can sense the masses of earth above you; you know that you have come well under the
land by the time the passage opens out into a huge cavern. The water here is foul and stagnant. You can
see nothing, but as you float in you brush against a huge wall of something solid yet smooth and slimy.
The wall twitches and ripples gigantic muscles, and you realize that this is the huge water dragon whose
thrashings have shaken the earth above. Careful not to disturb it, you edge warily around, your back
scraping against the high rock ceiling as you move over the mountain of slimy black flesh, feeling your
way by the faint flow of water rippling in and out of its gills and the currents stirring around its body. Its
long, coiled neck is thicker than an ancient oak tree, its snakelike head wider than a man is tall and twice
as long. You reach the place where you can feel the faint curve of its closed eye and breathe in the water’s
power, gathering yourself to strike. You sense the tightening in the dragon’s muscles, and before it can
waken or move again, you plunge the sword in through its eyeball and into its brain with all your might.
Its final convulsion jerks the sword out of your hands, flinging you upward and through a hole in the roof
of the cavern.
The water rushes straight up, carrying you with it through the mountain’s last quake. You burst out
of the darkness and into the light above the cascading waterfall, the new geyser spurting above you to
fling a shining torrent into the air, filling you with a great burst of light. Where the bright drops fall on the
ground, a carpet of leeks springs up, their green stalks almost bursting with brilliant might. You bend to
pull one up, then return to your own body, feet firmly planted on the earth, knowing the might that you
can always reach through the rune laguz.
