V. Meditate on the might of Nerthus flowing up through the tree and on the power of the tree itself flowing into your branch, shaped by the shining runes you sang. Aware of this power, you are also aware of the pain you are about to cause to your tree-brother or -sister. Put that energy into tree and branch as well. If a tear falls, touch it to the place where you are about to cut. VI. Cut the branch with one swift stroke if possible (this is why a hallowed axe may be needed), crying out sharply as a bright burst of might runs from your center down your weapon and into the tree, cutting through its limb. The wood should not be allowed to touch the ground, if possible. Hold it in both hands, concentrating on sealing the bright life-force it still holds inside a shining sphere, then wrap it in black cloth and put it away. Touch the tree where you have cut it, pouring some of your own strength into it to help it heal. It is thought right by many to put a drop of your own blood on the wound in the tree. VII. Say a short blessing of thanks to the tree, then put your hands on the earth again and thank Nerthus for her gift. Return home in utter silence. RITE OF WHEELS Purpose: To enliven the magical wheels of the body through runic meditation. The term “wheels of the body” is used in Teutonic magic for the whirling points of power along the spine which the Hindus call “chakras” and the Celts “cauldrons.” These wheels are gateways bringing might from the various forms of the soul into the earthly body and from the hidden worlds of power into the soul. Normally they are small and dim, moving sluggishly. For proper magical functioning, it is important to open and enliven each of them in turn, awakening the specific quality of power which dwells in every level of your being. This awakening will make both magical and psychic functioning easier, since in addition to allowing a greater passage of power through you it also increases your perceptions and aids in awakening your own hidden abilities. This exercise has been designed to strengthen and enliven the wheels of power from crown to feet and back again through the use of specific runes and colors. Lie down or sit with back straight, knees and feet together, palms on thighs, eyes closed. Begin deep meditative breathing until you are completely relaxed and feel yourself in a state verging on trance. Slowly begin to vibrate the sound of sowilo, “sssss,” seeing and feeling this rune whirling in wheels of white radiance at your crown, brow, throat, heart, solar plexus, groin/base of your spine, and feet. When you feel this strongly, throw your force up to the crown of your head, vibrating the rune elhaz and seeing a sphere of rainbow-sparkling white spinning there with a brilliant red elhaz at its hub. Do this until you can feel the crown of your head tingling with its radiant might. Breathe inward, seeing a white ray stretching downward to the center of your forehead. Vibrate the rune mannaz, seeing a deep violet sphere of glowing light whirling in the center of your forehead around a burning red mannaz while the wheel above your crown spins with none of its rainbowed-white light lost. Again, do this until you can feel the force of the wheel as a bodily sensation in the center of your brow. Breathe inward, sending a purple ray down to your throat. Vibrate the rune ansuz . The color of this wheel should be deep, shining blue, the rune, as all of the runes will be, red. Continue as before, sending a blue ray down to your heart, singing the rune wunjo and enlivening this sphere with gold. The wheel in your solar plexus should be a rich orange-red; vibrate jera. The wheel at your groin should be a deep, deep green-blue with a glowing center of red-gold at the base of your spine; vibrate laguz. At your feet, the wheel should be a shade of brown-green so dark it is almost black; vibrate berkano. Now aware of all the wheels spinning through your body, see the light they are giving off blend into a sphere of might around your body which glows darkly in the bottom third, bright red in the middle, and shades to shining gold at the top. This sphere is both might and shield around you. When you have become good at doing this, perform the rite as above. After vibrating berkano, 166
eathe several times deeply while concentrating on all the wheels spinning together. Then vibrate the rune sowilo, feeling an added power whirling into the lowest wheel. Sing eihwaz as you bring the might up from your root to the wheel at your groin in a brilliant stream of red-gold might, then sowilo as you strengthen that wheel. Repeat the eihwaz-sowilo process, letting the red-gold power flow up your spine and into each of the wheels to the top. Concentrate on the wheel at the crown of your head for a little while longer, then bring the might down to your roots again in the same manner. Stand with legs spread and arms and head upraised, vibrating, “Asgardhr-Midhgardhr-Hel!” Hold this peak for a few moments, then allow the fiery power to sink into darkness in your spine again. See the power of the wheels spinning out the dark-red-gold sphere of might and warding around you as at the previous completion. 167
