over the coals or through the smoke to increase its power. The firepot should be set within the southern
point of the circle.
Candles are used largely as focuses at the beginning of a ritual, representing the vitki's might
shaped by will. If you regularly charge your ritual candles, kenaz is the appropriate rune to use. A
candle may also be fully charged in the same manner as a talisman and burnt in a ritual to free its full
might into the working.
Candles are needed for light in nighttime workings, since having an electric light on is disruptive to
the more delicate flowings of energy. The candles should, if possible, be lit directly from the firepot
with an appropriate line of galdr and then set on the harrow before the vitki. Alternatively, candles can
be set within the borders of the circle at either the four or the eight points of the compass. If you wish,
candles used in this manner can be charged with the fires of elhaz and worked into the warding of the
circle.
Candle colors are dependent on the intuition of the vitki and the purpose of the rite. Red candles
serve well for almost everything; white and blue are also good general colors which may be preferred in
certain meditational and religious rituals. Otherwise, see the guide to Colors in Chapter 11.
MORTAR AND PESTLE
These items are used for grinding pigment and recels. Magically, only iron or steel are
unacceptable materials. Practically, you will do best with a small stone mortar and pestle (available at
many herb stores and/or head shops). Wood is more difficult to grind roots and bits of wood in;
earthenware tends to be rather breakable.
If graving runes on these items is possible, a good simple formula is eight wunjo-runes spaced
evenly around the rim of the mortar and a ninth on the top end of the pestle. The runes around the rim
blend the forces from the aettir of the heavens and the divisions of the runic circle, while the ninth shapes
and completes the harmony, bringing the numerical value up to 72(3 x the futhark count a particularly
powerful number in traditional runic workings).
It is necessary to clean the mortar and pestle thoroughly after every use, as it is both sloppy and
disruptive to have bits of the last working's energies interfering with those of the next. As you scrub the
physical residue out under running water, you should also see the cleansing power (uruz) of the water
running all through the mortar and pestle to remove all the magical residue.
THE HAMMER
The hammer is really more religious than magical in nature; however, inscriptions exist in which
Thorr is called upon "to hallow the runes." Magically, it is used to drive out all wights and forces which
are detrimental to the working and to fill the place or thing in question with holy might. Should you be
magically assailed, the hammer can be used in rites of defense. The sign of the hammer should be painted
or carved on or above the doors and windows of your house to ward it and bring "luck"-the weal-working
of the energies within.
The hammer should be all of iron or steeL or else have an oaken handle; the head should be
symmetrical, like that of a mallet, rather than a carpenter's hammer. It should be as heavy as the vitki can
comfortably handle. If possible, a swastika should be graven on each end. A good inscription for the haft
might be THORR VEURR (Thorr the Hallower):
(96=8 x 12 - orgarnic wholeness, power of the winds brought forth into the earth).
To use the hammer in hallowing, you should swing it three times deosil over the object or person
being hallowed, chanting a galdr such as "Veurr hallow vitki's might" or "Hammer hallow these holy
runes," envisioning a great rush of shining might whirling into your object from the swinging hammer.
