THE HARROW
The harrow, or altar, should be the center of your place of working. This place may be either
outdoors or indoors; if outdoors, in the center of a grove is preferred, but hardly necessary. If you can do
your workings under the open sky, it is important to be assured of your privacy and freedom from
distraction. Trucks and airplanes roaring by hardly enhance concentration, while some people (and police)
become very upset when faced with any form of magical or pagan working.
The most traditional form of harrow is one made of heaped stones under the open sky. If you
should find a large natural boulder set in an appropriate place that feels right for your working, so much
the better. In this case the circle, rather than being drawn or embroidered, should be cut into the earth
around the harrow with your ritual knife.
If a stone harrow should be impractical, the next best choice is one made of oak or ash. A small
flat-topped cabinet in which the ritual tools can be stored when not in use is excellent for this purpose.
This harrow can be rubbed with a charged oil in the same manner as the other wooden tools. If you so
wish, the futhark ring can be carved upon it along with such other inscriptions as seem fitting, depending
on whether it is used more for worship or for magic, or equally for both.
