9 READING THE RUNES
Reading the runes rightly is perhaps the most difficult of the runic skills, as it calls for a deep and
thorough knowledge of all the runes and their interaction with each other, as well as considerable insight
and the mental training not to be swayed by your desire for a certain answer. You must know how the
runes work for woe as well as for weal and always be on your guard against the tendency to put the most
favorable interpretation on every rune that falls Unlike the Tarot, reversal of runes has no meaning; their
aspects depend entirely on position, interaction, and the context of the question.
Perhaps the best way to learn how to read the runes is to do it daily in the morning, writing down
the runes and your reading of them, and then at night writing what occurred in the course of the day and
comparing it to the runes of the morning. As so much of the practice of this lore has been lost, it can only
be reclaimed through practice together with contemplation.
MAKING THE RUNES
The most traditional method of making the runes is to carve them individually on twigs, small wands, or
slips of wood. This should be done as if each were a taufr, except that rather than using a galdr-spell to
shape the force into the use one wants, you should strive to fill the stave with the wholeness of its being,
both for weal and for woe. You may make runes for longterm use, or, in matters of great importance,
carve a set of twigs for a single casting, after which they are burnt. If you are unable to make your own
runes, you should cleanse, charge, and color a bought set as if you had made it yourself. In empowering
the casting runes, after the Circle Rite, you should call on the power of Odhinn and on Urdhr, Verdhandt
and Skuld. For a single-use ritual, this calling should also include your question. The steps of
concealment and bringing forth after the carving and coloring may be left out altogether, or you may
replace them with these steps:
1. Wrap the runes in a black cloth, binding them about nine times. Chant:
“Within the dark watersof Urdhr’s deep well
Wait all Wyrd’s runesthe world there written
Nine nights in the webthe knowing Norns weave.
Walk the circle nine times deosil, your body turning widdershins.
2. Trace the rune perthro around the wrapped runes with gandr or sax, singing its name. Unwrap the
runes, intoning:
Runes written forthto work from Wyrd’s well
Flow forth from the darknessto be read aright
Written by UrdhrVerdhandi and Skuld
Show me what iswhat shapes and shall be!
In a single-use ritual, the staves may be cast now; otherwise, say,
Wrought is the work. So shall it be!
See the runes enclosed in a shining sphere of might which holds the power in them, ready to show the
streams of their force flowing forth from the Well when they fall. Place them in their pouch or casting
cup.
3. Absorb the energy of the circle into yourself or return it to the universe.
