By way of example let us look at two incidents of Sayyidina Umar (Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu)<br />

. There was a dispute between a Muslim and a non- Muslim. The case was heard by<br />

Rasulullah (S<strong>al</strong>l<strong>al</strong>lahu Alayhi Was<strong>al</strong>lam) and he gave judgement in favour of the non-<br />

Muslim. The Muslim thought that being a Muslim, Sayyidina Umar (Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu<br />

anhu) would surely take this into consideration and possibly show him some manner<br />

of favour. He requested that his case be heard by Umar (Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu). The non-<br />

Muslim said: “Rasulullah (S<strong>al</strong>l<strong>al</strong>lahu A.layhi Was<strong>al</strong>lam) had given judgement in my<br />

favour. But this man does not accept the decision. He requested that the case be heard<br />

by you.”<br />

Umar (Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu) asked the Muslim: “Is this true what he says?” The Muslim<br />

replied: “Yes it is true.”<br />

Sayyidina Umar (Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu) without saying another word, went inside and<br />

fetched a sword. With it he beheaded the Muslim saying: “This is judgement for him<br />

who is not satisfied with the decision of Rasulullah (S<strong>al</strong>l<strong>al</strong>lahu Alayhi Was<strong>al</strong>lam).”<br />

Now listen to another incident about this same Umar (Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu). The story is<br />

quite lengthy. Briefly, this is it: Rasulullah (S<strong>al</strong>l<strong>al</strong>lahu Alayhi Was<strong>al</strong> lam) once gave<br />

his shoes to Sayyidina Abu Hurayrah (Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu) as a token, saying: “Go fetch<br />

whomsoever you chance to meet, who with hart and soul declares: LA—ILAHA<br />

ILLILLAH, give unto him the good news that he sh<strong>al</strong>l enter paradise.”<br />

Abu Hurayrah (Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu) went out and the first person he met was Umar<br />

(Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu). Umar (Raclj<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu) asked: “How is it that these shoes are<br />

carried around by you.” Thereupon Abu Hurayrab (Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu) gave the good<br />

news from Rasulullah (S<strong>al</strong>l<strong>al</strong>lahu Alayhi Was<strong>al</strong>lam). Umar (Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu) struck<br />

him so hard against his breast with both hands that he fell down flat. He then told him<br />

to go back. Abu Hurayrah (Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu) came to Rasulullah (S<strong>al</strong>l<strong>al</strong>lahu Alayhi<br />

Was<strong>al</strong>larn) and weeping loudly, told Rasulullah (S<strong>al</strong>l<strong>al</strong>lahu Alayhi Was<strong>al</strong>lam) what<br />

had happened. Umar (Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu) <strong>al</strong>so appeared immediately after him.<br />

Rasulullah (S<strong>al</strong>l<strong>al</strong>lahu Alayhi Was<strong>al</strong>lam) asked: “Why did you do this?”<br />

Umar (Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu) replied: “0 Messenger of Allah, do not do this because<br />

people will rely on these glad tidings, sit contented and neglect good works.”<br />

(Mishkat).<br />

Now I ask you. Does this mean (Allah forbid) that Umar (Radi<strong>al</strong>lahu anhu)<br />

disregarded the saying of Rasulullah (S<strong>al</strong>l<strong>al</strong>lahu Alayhi Was<strong>al</strong>lam)? Or that he stood<br />

up to oppose the statement ohhe Rasul(S<strong>al</strong>l<strong>al</strong>lahu Alayhi Was<strong>al</strong>lam) or acted contrary<br />

to it?<br />

In order to correlate this incident with the previous one, it requires depth of<br />

knowledge. Look at yet another incident: It was the battle of Badr and Rasulullah<br />
