married second, at Castlemilk, Nov. 3, 1781, Jean Stuart, young-<br />

est daughter of the deceased Sir John Stuart of Castlemilk, Bart.<br />

William Stirling died suddenly at Keir, May 22, 1793; buried<br />

at Dunblane.<br />

William's children by his first marriage were:<br />

XIX 1 James Stirling, born at Cadder, Oct. 8, 1766 ; succeeded<br />

his father.<br />

2 John Stirling, born at Cadder, Feb. 23, 1768; went<br />

to Kingston, Jamaica, in 1789, and died there in<br />

Hampden, Mar. 24, 1793 ; unmarried.<br />

XIX 3 Archibald Stirling, born at Cadder, Aug. 2, 1769<br />

succeeded his brother James.<br />

4 Charles Stirling, born at Cadder, May 12, 1771. He<br />

inherited from his father a thirteenth share in the<br />

copartnery of Somerville, Gordon and Co., West<br />

India Merchants in Glasgow, and was engaged<br />

during most of his life conducting the affairs<br />

of that firm. In 1806 he purchased the lands<br />

of KENMURE, adjoining his brother's estate of<br />

Cadder, and built the greater part of the existing<br />

Mansion house, which he sold to his brother<br />

Archibald for £40,000. He married at Linlathen,<br />

Oct. 14, 1817, Christian, daughter of David<br />

Erskine, C.S., and died at Cadder, Jan. 30, 1830;<br />

buried at Lecropt, being the first of his family<br />

buried in the vault under the southern end of the<br />

then recently built church.<br />

5 Robert Stirling, twin with Margaret, born at Cadder,<br />

Dec. 24, 1772; went to Jamaica in 1790, and<br />

became a planter. He married, in 1807, Sarah,<br />

daughter of Dr. Thomas Steel i<br />

of Steelfield,<br />

Jamaica ; he died at Kingston, Jamaica, Sept. 28,<br />

1808, leaving one daughter, Helen, who died in<br />

London, Feb. 4, 1822. His widow married Sept.<br />

3, 1821, Com. Gen. Thomas Dunmore, and died<br />

June 23, 1823.<br />

1 <strong>The</strong> "Monumental Inscriptions of the British West Indies," 1875, p. 121, gives<br />

the inscription upon the stone of Robert <strong>Sterling</strong>: "Robert Stirling, Esq., of Hampton,<br />

in the Parish of St. James — Fifth son of William Stirling of Keir, in the County of<br />

Perthshire, Scotland, who died September the 28th 1808, aged 36 years." <strong>The</strong> same<br />

work states that "the branches of the Stirlings of Kippenross and Kippendavie were<br />

also connected with Jamaica. Patrick, son of John Stirling of the latter, married a<br />

daughter of George Wedderburn of Paris, Westmoreland, and William Stirling, his<br />

younger brother, married the daughter and heiress of Henry Barrett of Cinnamon<br />
