near New Milford, Conn. He d. there Feb. 18, 1870. Betsey d.<br />

Anna Nichols, b. in 1767 in Trumbull. Elijah was a farmer in<br />

Trumbull, occupying the homestead of his father. He d. there<br />

June 16, 1844. She d. Sept. 19, 1851.<br />

759 Sylvanus <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. in 1787 ; m. Polly Beach (No. 789),<br />

b. Oct. 4, 1791, dau. of Dr. James E. and Hulda<br />

(Sherman) Beach. He saw three days service in<br />

the War of 1812, Apr. 14 to Apr. 17, 1814. Sylvanus<br />

<strong>Sterling</strong> was one of the leading men of Bridgeport,<br />

Conn., in his day. He was member of a firm<br />

of saddlery manufacturers ; was elected president<br />

of Bridgeport Bank in 1838, an office he held for<br />

eleven years ; was elected deacon of the First Congregational<br />

church there in 1831 and served until<br />

his death, July 11, 1848. In 1882 a memorial window<br />

was placed in this building to his memory. Mrs.<br />

<strong>Sterling</strong> d. Feb. 22, 1866, leaving no issue but a<br />

considerable estate. By her will, the homestead was<br />

given to the First Congregational Church Society<br />

for a parsonage and after providing for friends<br />

the residue was given to the society known us the
