seph, Daniel, William), b. in Ontario Co., N. Y., Dec. 27, 1793 ; the<br />

first white child born in the Genesee Valley; m. Feb. 8, 1818,<br />

Isabel Kelso, b. in Canada, Jan. 1, 1799, dau. of David Kelso.<br />

William <strong>Sterling</strong> removed to Gaines, Orleans Co., N. Y., in<br />

company with his next younger brother Alphonso, in 1817, and<br />

took up a tract of land of several hundred acres. He remained<br />

here where five of his children were born, until 1828, when he re-<br />

moved to the township of Sparta, Crawford Co., Penn. Here<br />

he cleared a one hundred acre farm, built the first sawmill and<br />

the first wool-carding mill in the township and served for a long<br />

period of years as justice of the peace by appointment from the<br />

Governor of the State. Mrs. Isabel <strong>Sterling</strong> d. Oct. 20, 1876.<br />

William <strong>Sterling</strong> d. in Newfield, N. J., Dec. 24, 1879. Both are<br />

buried in Spartansburg, Penn.<br />
