lived in his early life at Pitcher Chenango Co., N. Y., going there<br />

with his father's family in 1810. Here he studied medicine with<br />

Dr. David McWhorter and attended lectures at Fairfield, N. Y.<br />

was licensed as a physician by the Herkimer Co. Medical Soc. in<br />

1829; settled Feb. 28, 1829, in Hamlet, Villenova township, Chau-<br />

tauqua Co., N. Y., a district just being settled, where he practised<br />

medicine for 20 years. He was supervisor of his town from 183-1<br />

to 1836, and from 1839 to 1849, and represented his district in the<br />

Assembly of the State in the winter of 1841-42. In 1850 he was<br />

attacked by a spinal disease which confined him to his bed until his<br />

death, June 17, 1861. Mrs. George White in speaking of her<br />

" She was endowed with a serenity of spirit very fav-<br />

mother says :<br />

orable to longevity. Her ninety-two years of untiring usefulness<br />

place her above and beyond all praise." Mary Ann d. at Fre-<br />

donia, N. Y., Feb. 16, 1900.<br />

Nye, b. in 1680, lived in Mansfield, Conn.; she d. May 14, 1749; he d. Dec 5, 1794.<br />

<strong>The</strong>ir son Seth Peirce, b. Sept. 12, 1744; m. April 17, 1767, Bethiah Fields, b. in 1745,<br />

d. Sept. 18, 1807: he d. in 1835. <strong>The</strong>ir son Gurdon Peirce, b. Aug. 31, 1773. m. in<br />

1796, Thirsa Smalley, who d. in 1861; he d. Feb. 7, 1875; their son Austin Peirce m.<br />
