Abner and Mary (Gould) Bond, natives of New Jersey. Mary<br />

Gould was dau. of Sarah (Ward) Gould, a native of Edinburgh,<br />

Scotland. Mr. <strong>Sterling</strong> was a minister of the Christian faith<br />

and a farmer and cooper. He resided for some years at Knowles-<br />

ville, Orleans Co., N. Y., later in Middleport, Niagara Co., N. Y.,<br />

and for the last few years of his life in Rochester, N. Y., where<br />

he d. July 9, 1892. Mrs. <strong>Sterling</strong> was living in 1908 at Rochester<br />

with her two unmarried daughters.<br />

listed in Aug., 1861 ; was in Burnside's division in<br />

North Carolina; was orderly sergeant Co. F., 3d<br />

N. Y. Cavalry and was killed in a skirmish with<br />

guerillas, Mar. 4, 1863. Buried at Newbern, N. C.<br />

1367 Mary Ariminta <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. Jan. 30, 1843; unm. Has<br />

taught for many years in the schools of Rochester,<br />

N. Y.<br />

1368 Horace Greeley <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. Mar. 17, 1849 ; d. Mar. 3,<br />

496 CAROLINE ANN ROSS (Elizabeth, Samuel, Joseph, Dan-<br />

iel, William), b. in Wilkes-Barre, Perm., Feb. 24, 1797; m. 1st,<br />

May 14, 1815, Samuel Maffet, b. in Linden, Penn., July 7, 1789,<br />

son of John Maffet, of Scotch descent, a native of County Tyrone,<br />

Ireland, who came to America about 1774. Samuel Maffet was<br />

editor of <strong>The</strong> Susquehanna Democrat in Wilkes-Barre ; was after-<br />

wards recorder of deeds, register of wills, prothonotary, clerk of<br />

the courts, clerk of the Orphan's Court and a captain in the<br />

Pennsylvania Militia. He d. of consumption Aug. 15, 1825.<br />

Caroline m. 2d, Feb. 3, 1828, in Wilkes-Barre, Elisha Atherton,<br />

b. in Wyoming Valley, May 7, 1786, son of James Atherton,<br />

b. Sept. 19, 1751, who m. May 3, 1774, Lydia Washburn (b.
