WILLIAM STERLING OF HAVERHILL, MASS. 347<br />

Ephraim a farm of about seventy-five acres, all lying on the north<br />

side of the highway except one acre.<br />

Tradition states that Ephraim <strong>Sterling</strong> was a soldier in the<br />

Revolution, but his name is not given on the published records.<br />

His title of Captain was gained in the Militia. He was appointed<br />

by the General Assembly of the State to be " ensign of the 10th<br />

Co. trainband, of 4th Regt." in May 1777, and was made lieuterh-<br />

ant of the same body in May, 1778, but it does not appear that<br />

he ever saw active service. (Conn. Rev. Rolls.) A list of sub-<br />

scribers to a fund for the relief of soldiers at Valley Forge Mar.<br />

11, 1778, states that Ephraim gave 12s., it being the largest sub-<br />

scription. " Mrs. Starling gave 41b. 4 oz of cheese." He was a<br />

member of the school committee in North Stratford in 1773. Late<br />

in life Ephraim and his wife moved to the vicinity of New Milford,<br />

Conn., where his sons Ephraim and David had settled. He d.<br />

shortly after. <strong>The</strong> inscriptions on the gravestones erected to their<br />

memory in the Gaylordsville burying ground are : " In memory of<br />

Ephraim <strong>Sterling</strong>, who died Jan. 13 th , 1811. Aged. 68 years," and<br />

" In memory of Sarah <strong>Sterling</strong>, wife of Capt. Ephraim <strong>Sterling</strong>,<br />

who d. Mar. 8, 1835, Aged 87 years."<br />

Ephraim's children (from family record and that of the Unity<br />

church in Trumbull) by his first wife were:<br />
