He was four years, from 1854, a director of the Bridgeport<br />

In 1836 he bought of the heirs of Abram Tomlinson the corner<br />

south of the Congregational church in Stratford. <strong>The</strong> spot is still<br />

occupied by the family and is known as the <strong>Sterling</strong> Homestead.<br />

Here he spent the last thirty years of his life and died Feb. 13,<br />

1866.<br />

Mrs. Catharine <strong>Sterling</strong> was still living in Stratford (1902).<br />

Mr. <strong>Sterling</strong> is buried in the Congregational burying place in<br />

Bridgeport, as is the first wife, Mary (Judson) <strong>Sterling</strong>.<br />

1911 Mary Judson <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. in Feb., 1838; d. Sept. 14,<br />

1838.<br />

1912 t Catharine Mary <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. May 9, 1841; m. Rufus W.<br />

Bunnell.<br />

1913 t John William <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. May 12, 1844.<br />

1914 Cordelia <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. Mar. 18, 1846; unm. ; lives in<br />

Stratford, Conn.<br />

794 DAVID STERLING (brother of the above), b. in Bridge-<br />

port, July 9, 1799 ; m. Mar. 6, 1822, Emma Waterman. He was<br />

a printer and later a manufacturer in Bridgeport. He went to<br />

California in 1848 and d. there Aug. 31, 1849.<br />

Sherwood <strong>Sterling</strong> was one of the foremost citizens of Bridge-<br />

port and of Fairfield, where he lived during the latter years of his
