Governor of Cork, Ireland, where he was knighted<br />

Nov. 22, 1648. Sir Robert obtained on Oct. 9, 1649,<br />

a grant of arms from the Ulster King. This grant is<br />

a lengthy document and in part relates " whereas <strong>The</strong><br />

Hunourable Robert <strong>Sterling</strong>, Knight, Governor of the<br />

Citty and County of Corke, President of the Councell<br />

of Warre, Sargent Major Generall of His Majesties<br />

Councell in the said province," etc. He was made a<br />

knight by the Lord Marquis of Ormond, Governor<br />

General of Ireland, for his distinguished services and<br />

loyalty to the late King Charles and his son, then<br />

reigning, and for the effusion<br />

Upon the margin of the Grant is the following<br />

memorandum :<br />

" Sir Robert <strong>Sterling</strong> knight was En-<br />

sign of Foot, Lieutenant of Horse and Captain of<br />

Dragoons in Germany, under the command of the<br />

King of Sweden, where he serued eleuen yeers. He<br />

was the fowerth of December 1641, made Sargent<br />

Major and in the same Month Lieutenant Colonell, by<br />

commission from his Excellency, James Marques of<br />

Ormonde, then Lieutenant Generall of all his Majesties<br />

forces in Ireland. He was made Colonell of Foot<br />

the Xlth of September 1645 : Gouernor of the Citty<br />

of Corke, President of the Councell of Warre, one of<br />

his Majestes Councell and Sergent Major Generall<br />

of his Majesties Forces in the Province of Munster,"<br />

etc. " Hee was knighted att Corke the XII day of<br />

Nouember, Anno 1648."<br />

<strong>The</strong> patent further shows from the marginal Pedigrees<br />

that Sir Robert married Jane, daughter of<br />

Edward, Lord Blaney, by whom he had three sons<br />

Capt. Laurence, Robert, and Edward <strong>Sterling</strong>, all<br />

three of whom it is said died unmarried.<br />
