Ireland, and Emeline the dau. of Perrin and Hannah (Utley)<br />

Ross, natives of Connecticut, who came to western Pennsylvania<br />

at an early day. <strong>The</strong> father of Perrin was killed in the Massacre<br />

of Wyoming. {See No. 216.)<br />

After his marriage, Mr. <strong>Sterling</strong> went to Minnesota and, Sept.<br />

1, 1873, went to Owatonna to teach in the graded school. <strong>The</strong>nce<br />

he went to act as principal of a newly organized independent school<br />

at Garden City. <strong>The</strong> following two years he was principal of the<br />

Pleasant Grove school at Mankato. A position in the State<br />

Normal school was offered him but was declined in favor of the<br />

superintendency of public schools at St. Peter. This position he<br />

held two years, when he went into the retail marble business in<br />

Mankato. He removed to Minneapolis, where he engaged in the<br />

real estate business in which he has since continued.<br />

In 1887 Mr. <strong>Sterling</strong> was elected to the city council for a two-<br />

year term. His fellow members chose him as vice-president,<br />

and upon the resignation of the president he was promoted by the<br />

council to fill the vacancy. In the absence of the mayor Mr. Ster-<br />

ling acted in that capacity.<br />
