WILLIAM STERLING OF HAVERHILL, MASS. 397<br />

William was a prominent citizen of Lyme, Conn. ; he lived at<br />

<strong>Sterling</strong> City on the opposite side of the valley from his father's<br />

home near the old cemetery and nearly opposite the Capt. Daniel<br />

<strong>Sterling</strong> house. He was a colonel in the Connecticut Militia. He<br />

d. May 10, 1827, and is buried in the <strong>Sterling</strong> cemetery. His<br />

wife d. at Gouverneur, N. Y., May 27, 1839.<br />

660 Robert Ely <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. Mar. 29, 1796 ; d. Mar. 6, 1806.<br />

661 t Thomas Sill <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. Apr. 5, 1798; m. Mary P. Falconer.<br />

662 t William Erastus <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. June 4, 1801 ; m. Octavia<br />

Parsons.<br />

663 t Jerusha Lay <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. May 25, 1803 ; m. Edwin Dodge.<br />

664 Maria Ely <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. Oct. 15, 1807 ; m. May 23, 1832,<br />

Rev. Barach Beckwith, b. in Lyme, Mar. 29, 1805,<br />

son of George and Patience Beckwith. He graduated<br />

from Williams College, 1827, and from the<br />

<strong>The</strong>ological department of Yale, 1831. Settled at<br />

Athol, Mass., 1831, removed to Castine, Me., and to<br />

Gouverneur, N. Y., 1843, where he was pastor of the<br />

Presbyterian church. She d. in 1881. No issue.<br />

365 Phebe Hubbard <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. Oct. 2, 1809; d. unm. July<br />

20, 1830 ; buried by her father and brother Robert<br />

in the <strong>Sterling</strong> City cemetery.<br />

256 JEMIMA STERLING (sister of the above), b. in <strong>Sterling</strong><br />

City, July 3, 1772; m. there June 21, 1789, William Sill, b. in<br />

Lyme, Dec. 6, 1760, third son of Joseph Sill and his first wife,<br />

Ruth Matson. (See No. 110.)<br />

William Sill was a storekeeper at <strong>Sterling</strong> City, Lyme, occupy-<br />

ing a house still standing on the lower road a few steps from the<br />

house of his father-in-law Capt. William <strong>Sterling</strong>. He d. in Lyme,<br />

Mar. 1848. Jemima m. 2d, Benjamin Towne, b. at Belchertown,<br />

Mass., Aug. 4, 1765; settled at Granville, N. Y. He m. 1st, Mary<br />

Shumway (b. May 27, 1771 ; d. 1804) ; 2d, in 1806, Lois Kenney :<br />

3d, Mrs. Jemima Sill, and d. in 1852. Mrs. Jemima Towne d. at<br />

Watertown, N. Y., about 1860.<br />

Mary Noyes. He d. 1760. His son, Amrai Ruhama Ely, b. 1731 ; m. Martha Peck,<br />

and d. 1799. <strong>The</strong>ir son Zelophehad Ely, b. 1765; m. Elizabeth M. <strong>Sterling</strong>. (.See<br />
