271 ELISHA PERKINS (Lydia, Joseph, Daniel, William), b. in<br />

Lyme, Conn., July 25, 1768 ; m. Mary Ransom of Woodstock, Vt.<br />

(No. 233), b. at Lyme, Conn., Feb. 3, 1769, dau. of Richard and<br />

Mary (<strong>Sterling</strong>) Ransom. Elisha left Lyme with his father, when<br />

25 years old, and settled in Vermont, where he engaged in the<br />

tanning of hides and shoemaking. Later sold his business to his<br />

brother Gaius and for a time kept a store and later a tavern.<br />

In 1819 he removed with his family to what was then the remote<br />

West, Troy, Lincoln Co., Mo., where he established an important<br />

industry in the manufacture of hides and in the making of shoes.<br />

<strong>The</strong> journey to Troy was then a very great undertaking and was<br />

made with two large wagons and five horses; of these, one w as<br />

taken as a reserve and often used by the daughters for a lit tit<br />

pleasant variety of horseback riding.<br />

Both Mr. Perkins and his wife d. in Troy in 1851.
