daga Co. he built the Baptist Church structure now standing at<br />

Pompey Hill. He himself was a Presbyterian of the " auld licht<br />

order, an omnivorous reader and serious thinker. An Onondaga<br />

Co. History by Prof. W. W. Clayton says : " Nathaniel <strong>Sterling</strong>,<br />

a carpenter and joiner, settled on the farm now (1878) occupied<br />

by Luther Balse. He built the Baptist Church at Pompey Hill<br />

and the church now standing in La Fayette village. <strong>The</strong> latter<br />

part of his life was spent on a farm. He was a leading man in<br />

religious and educational matters."<br />

He was interested in his family's history and made some search<br />

of early records. He d. in Wilton, Apr. 10, I860, and is buried<br />

in St. Matthew's cemetery near his first wife.<br />

811 Polly Almira <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. in Wilton, Dec. 26, 1801 ; d.<br />

at Lafayette, N. Y., May 30, 1838, unm., and is<br />

buried there.<br />

812 t Charles Stephen <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. Mar. 24, 1804; m. Armenia<br />

Hasbrouck.<br />

813 Jonathan Hoyt <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. in Wilton, Aug. 6, 1808; m.<br />

Sept. 13, 1836, Mary Ann Smith, b. in Pompey, N.<br />

Y., Sept. 4, 1811. <strong>The</strong>y removed to near Norwalk,<br />

Huron Co., Ohio, where he d. Sept. 22, 1890. She<br />

d. Jan. 20, 1888. No issue.<br />

815 t William Wiltshire <strong>Sterling</strong>, b. Oct. 3, 1819; m. Mary<br />

Miller.<br />

In the family Bible of Nathaniel <strong>Sterling</strong> and his<br />

father, is inserted the following: " Almira S. Goodell,<br />

b. in La Fayette, On. Co., N. Y., Aug. 11, 1847;<br />

named by special request as a token of friendship<br />
