ling, his ancestor, with Robert Stirling, designated by Janet<br />

Stirling, heiress of Cadder, to be her nearest male heir, he was<br />

granted the representation and given their arms with supporters.<br />

He married May 26, 1778, Anne Stirling, daughter of Sir Walter<br />

Stirling, of Faskine, by his wife, Dorothy Willing. She died June<br />

1, 1830. He died in 1823.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y had sixteen children<br />

1 William Stirling, born Mar. 18, 1779; died unmarried in<br />

1850.<br />

2 Walter Stirling, born in 1780 ; died unmarried in 1864.<br />

3, 4, and 5 Dorothy, Mary, and Mary, who died young.<br />

X 6 John Stirling, born Oct. 20, 1786, of whom hereafter.<br />

7 Eliza Stirling, died young.<br />

8 Charles Stirling, born in 1789 ; married in 1827, Charlotte<br />

Dorothea, daughter of Admiral Charles Stirling of<br />

Woburn, in Surrey, England (q. v.). He acquired the<br />

estate of Muiravonside in Linlithgowshire ; died Aug.<br />

26, 1867; she died June 25, 1862.<br />

Children<br />

1 Andrew Stirling of Muiravonside, born in 1829;<br />

married in 1864, Georgina Louisa, daughter of Sir<br />

Henry Martin Blackwood, Bart. Andrew was a cap-<br />

tain in the Royal Navy ; he sold Muiravonside to his<br />

cousin, Thomas Mayne Stirling, in 1883. No issue.<br />

2 Charles Stirling, born in 1831 ; captain in the<br />

Royal Navy ; married in 1863, Selina, daughter of<br />

Arthur Grote of the India Civil Service (brother of<br />

George Grote, the historian), and has one son, Grote,<br />

born in 1875; married in 1903, Mabel, daughter of<br />

Dr. Richard Whish Brigstock, Royal Navy of Bey-<br />

rout, in Syria.<br />

3 Gen. Sir William Stirling, K.C.B., born Aug. 4,<br />

1835. Educated at Edinburgh Academy and at the<br />

Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. Served with<br />

the Royal Army in the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny,<br />

the China Expedition of 1860, and the Afghan<br />

Campaign, 1878-1879; lieutenant of the Tower of<br />

London ; married first, in 1864, Anne Douglas, daugh-<br />

ter of Sylvester Douglas Stirling of Glenbervie (q. v.),<br />

who died in 1867; married second, July 14, 1869,<br />

Anna Christian, daughter of William Stirling, younger,<br />

of Kippendavie (
