Irving Baldwin, b. in New Haven, Conn., May 13, 1829, son of<br />

Silas and Eliza E. (Newton) Baldwin.<br />

In Oct., 1853, Mr. Baldwin removed to Cleveland, Ohio, and<br />

in partnership with his father established himself in the retail<br />

dry goods business. <strong>The</strong> firm prospered and increased in scope<br />

until it became the leading house in the city. Mr. Baldwin was<br />

the pioneer in erecting fine business structures, his firm erecting<br />

at a cost of one hundred thousand dollars, the first extension<br />

building raised in Cleveland to accommodate a retail mercantile<br />

concern. He d. in Cleveland, Jan. 27, 1893. Mrs. Baldwin<br />

still claims Cleveland as her home although since her husband's<br />

death she has resided in Europe.<br />

Nov. 13, 1842, dau. of John Henry and Caroline (Banghart)<br />

Campbell.<br />

John <strong>Sterling</strong> was educated at the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary<br />

at Lima, N. Y. He was a civil engineer during the greater part<br />

of his life, residing in Detroit, save for a period of a few years<br />

when he was stationed at Grand Rapids, where he held the posi-<br />

tion of superintendent of tracks, bridges and buildings on the
