intrusion accelerated and intensified in the Makgabeng area, some identities<br />

were changed, some were destroyed, while new ones were formed,<br />

especially as a result <strong>of</strong> acquisition <strong>of</strong> wealth and power by various groups.<br />

For instance, as a result <strong>of</strong> increased levels <strong>of</strong> interaction, groups <strong>of</strong> traders,<br />

cattle-herders, landlords, preachers, messengers, and other identities which<br />

resulted from group contacts, emerged among those groups who<br />

assembled in the Makgabeng area.<br />

The impact <strong>of</strong> Mfecane/Difaqane on political<br />

identities in Makgabeng<br />

Taking place almost simultaneously with the intensification <strong>of</strong> the European<br />

movement into the Makgabeng area was an important phenomenon which<br />

was known as the Mfecane/Difaqane. These two processes – arrival <strong>of</strong><br />

Europeans in the Makgabeng area and the Mfecane/Difaqane – took place<br />
