agreeing to the contents <strong>of</strong> the minister’s certificate <strong>of</strong> approval, including<br />

the price <strong>of</strong> the farms, as well as all the conditions contained in the<br />

document. After the “tribe” had agreed with the contents <strong>of</strong> the certificate,<br />

the deal would then be signed. The signing was normally done by the<br />

recognised chief on behalf <strong>of</strong> “his/her tribe”. All these procedures<br />

strengthened the feeling <strong>of</strong> belonging together among the farm<br />

purchasers who had different backgrounds. This enhanced interaction<br />

and as such, further shaped their communal identity because according<br />

to one theoretical notion on identity creation, interaction with others plays<br />

a significant role in identity formation 441 .<br />

These were the few examples <strong>of</strong> signature for farms in the Makgabeng<br />

area: 442<br />

Kgoši Sekgwari Matlala signed for the purchase <strong>of</strong> the<br />

farms Early Dawn No. 996 and Millstream No. 995<br />

from the Bourke Trust and Estate Company Limited<br />

on 8 August 1945; the farm Non Parella No. 1086 was<br />

signed for by Kgoši Joel Mutshedi Matlala on 4<br />

December 1945 on behalf <strong>of</strong> the Bakone “tribe” who<br />

were buying it from the sellers J.T. Bosh<strong>of</strong>f, J.H.<br />
