egan to sell some <strong>of</strong> those farms for various reasons. The Whites found<br />

themselves owning massive tracts <strong>of</strong> land – thanks to the dispossession<br />

<strong>of</strong> that land from Blacks – and selling some <strong>of</strong> the land by the new White<br />

landowners became a new phenomenon. Black communities who were<br />

now landless, were forced to be the buyers <strong>of</strong> land from the new White<br />

owners who were freely granted the land which was confiscated from the<br />

same Blacks. As already pointed out, this confiscation and dispossession<br />

<strong>of</strong> land from Black were emphasised and legalised by the passing <strong>of</strong><br />

legislation such as the 1913 Natives Land Act and the 1936 Native trust<br />

and land act by the White-only governments.<br />

As a result <strong>of</strong> this situation, numerous Blacks got together to form<br />

corporatives which they used as vehicles to purchase land. In the<br />

Makgabeng area, the White landowners who had acquired land gratis<br />

made available large tracts <strong>of</strong> land for the purchase by Blacks. According<br />

to one informant in the Makgabeng area, M<strong>of</strong>otoloko Mashilo, other farms<br />

which were put on sale belonged to the government (confiscated from<br />

Blacks earlier) and they were made available for purchase by Blacks<br />

because <strong>of</strong> the government expenses incurred as a result <strong>of</strong> the 1939 –<br />

1945 416 . The government sold land which it owned in order to fund its<br />
