were added to people to alleviate congestion.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the results <strong>of</strong> the White governments’ land policies was the<br />

overcrowding <strong>of</strong> people and livestock on land reserved for Blacks. The<br />

“native locations” could no longer provide for agricultural needs anymore,<br />

because there wasn’t enough pasturage and water. As already alluded to<br />

earlier, most Black communities lived on farms owned by White<br />

individuals, farmers and companies. On these farms, Blacks were<br />

subjected to forced and unpaid labour while on other farms, particularly<br />

those owned by companies, they were forced to pay rents and taxes. All<br />

these further worsened the situation <strong>of</strong> Blacks who were reeling from<br />

their loss <strong>of</strong> land and livestock.<br />

Another factor which added to dissatisfaction among Black communities<br />

on farms on which they were tenants, was the change <strong>of</strong> farm ownership.<br />

In some instances, when a farm owner sold his farm, the next owner<br />

might bring his new ways <strong>of</strong> running that farm, which in most cases were<br />

not palatable to the original tenants. Religion also fuelled discontent on<br />

Black reserves. Christians were in constant friction with Christians <strong>of</strong><br />

other denominations, as well as with those who were not Christians. The<br />
