Shed skin from the head <strong>of</strong> a snake showing the “watch glass” appearance <strong>of</strong><br />

the scales that cover the eyes. In his later account <strong>of</strong> the snake eye, Rochon-<br />

Duvigneaud (1943) instead likened the scales to rigid contact lenses.<br />
