(B). Owing to its transparency, the spectacle is the only part <strong>of</strong> any terrestrial vertebrate integument to<br />

be amenable to in vivo microscopy, allowing for example the visualization <strong>of</strong> live fibrocytes in the<br />

spectacle dermis (A) and squamous cells <strong>of</strong> the spectacle conjunctiva (B) . This makes it <strong>of</strong> potential<br />

value in studying the physiology <strong>of</strong> the integument. <strong>The</strong> dark horizontal bands are artifactual.<br />
