permitted to record <strong>the</strong>ir votes, but, naturally, without any power<br />

to penalise those who decline to accept <strong>the</strong> suggested trammels.<br />

The Eev. T. E, E. Stebbing, F.E.S., Sec.L.S., exhibited:—<br />

(1) a House-spider {Te(jenana sp.) with its cylindrical dwelling<br />

in <strong>the</strong> coiled fea<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> an Indian fan. The fan which <strong>the</strong> spider<br />

adapted to its purposes had been hanging up in a drawing-room at<br />

Jerusalem. The spider, forwarded by Miss Eitzjohn to Miss Grace<br />

Stebbing, reached England alive. And (2) a solid gnaur or<br />

excrescence upon <strong>the</strong> root <strong>of</strong> Cvpressus macrocarpa^ sent for<br />

exhibition by Mr. E. G. Smart, E.L.S., <strong>of</strong> Tunbridge Wells; it<br />

was eleven inches in circumference.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Peec'IVal remarked that such growths were commonly<br />

due to <strong>the</strong> attack <strong>of</strong> a Uredine fungus, which resulted in an<br />

hypertrophy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tissues ; it was not infrequent in Piiius, but<br />

more usual on <strong>the</strong> stem than <strong>the</strong> root.<br />

A lantern demonstration was given by Pr<strong>of</strong>. J. Bretland<br />

Earmee, E.E.S., F.Z.S., entitled " A brief Account <strong>of</strong> New Eesearches<br />

in Cancer," in which he alluded to current <strong>the</strong>ories <strong>of</strong><br />

cancerous growth, and <strong>the</strong>n proceeded to state his own discovery<br />

that <strong>the</strong> cytological changes in malignant growth resemble those<br />

exhibited by sporogenous or gametogenous tissues in plants and<br />

animals, in <strong>the</strong> occurrence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> nuclear division know<br />

as heterotype, as distinguished from <strong>the</strong> more usual homotype<br />

division.<br />

An animated discussion followed, <strong>the</strong> following speakers taking<br />

part :— Mr. J. T. Cunningham (visitor), Mr. J. E. S. Moore, Pr<strong>of</strong>.<br />

J. B. Earmer, Pr<strong>of</strong>. E. O. Bower (who deprecated <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />

certain new terms), Dr. D. H. Scott, Sec.L.S., Eev. T. E.<br />

E. Stebbing, Sec.L.S., Mr. Charles E. Walker (visitor), and was<br />

summed up by tlie President.<br />

Mr. Leslie Beeching Hall and Mr. Charles Edward Walker<br />

were elected, and Mr. Edward Percy Stebbing was admitted a<br />

Eellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Society</strong>.<br />

Dr. Eric Drabble, E.L.S. , exhibited a lantern-slide showing<br />

diagrams <strong>of</strong> bicarpellary fruits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Erench Beau. The specimens
