Mr. A. O. AValkkr exhibited (1) viviparous plauts ot" Cardamine<br />

pratensis, which phenomenon was unusiuilly manifest this<br />

year, probably due to <strong>the</strong> abnormal rainfall, and (2) a gall on <strong>the</strong><br />

flower-bud <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same plant, ascribed to Cecidomyia cardaminis.<br />

Dr. ScoxT, in remarking that <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> vivipary was to be<br />

found in most years in some degree, alluded to a paper by A. Hansen<br />

on <strong>the</strong> subject more than 20 years ago ( Abh. Seuckeub. naturf . Ges.<br />

xii. 1881).<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. T. M. Fries, F.M.L.S., who was present, had given a set<br />

<strong>of</strong> prints <strong>of</strong> portraits <strong>of</strong> Linnaeus from his recent volumes on <strong>the</strong><br />

career <strong>of</strong> his eminent countryman, and, speaking in German, expressed<br />

his gratification at <strong>the</strong> facilities afforded him, during a stay<br />

<strong>of</strong> a few weeks in <strong>London</strong>, <strong>of</strong> access to <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Linnean</strong><br />

manuscripts.<br />

The General Secretary reminded <strong>the</strong> Fellows <strong>of</strong> a paper by<br />

Mr. W. Carru<strong>the</strong>rs, which was an amplification <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> his<br />

Presidential Addresses, and read on <strong>the</strong> 4th March, 1897, in which<br />

<strong>the</strong> various portraits had been photographed for reproduction.<br />

Mr. "W. T. HiNDMARSH exhibited photographs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following<br />

ering, he believed for <strong>the</strong> first time in this country ;<br />

Maxim., <strong>the</strong> Japanese representative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> genus, with larger<br />

flowers than <strong>the</strong> original /S'. fjalacifolia, Torr. & Gray, and showing<br />

a tendency to vary in colour according to exposure ; and Bhodothamnus<br />

ChartuBcistus, Reichb., noteworthy for <strong>the</strong> abundance <strong>of</strong> its<br />

flowers.<br />

The Minutes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last Meeting were read and confirmed.<br />

Major Geo. Henry Evans was elected, and Mr. Eichard Thomas<br />

Baker was admitted a Fellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Society</strong>.<br />

The Eesolution <strong>of</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2nd June relative to <strong>the</strong><br />

revised Bye-Laws, and <strong>the</strong> Bye-Laws <strong>the</strong>mselves, were read a<br />

second time from <strong>the</strong> Chair.
