Mr. E. MoETON MiDDLETON, F.L.S., exhibited a holograph letter<br />

from Linnaeus to Haller, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong> following is a copy :<br />

This letter was printed in Latin in ' Epistolarum ab Eruditis<br />

Viris ad Alb. Hallerum,' published at Berue in 1773, vol. ii.<br />

p. 32G. It is also printed in Smith's ' Correspondence <strong>of</strong><br />

Linnaeus,' vol. ii. p. 415. The seal, <strong>of</strong> red wax, is still sharp ; it<br />

is engraved in <strong>the</strong> Memoir <strong>of</strong> Linnaeus published at Upsala and<br />

Stockholm in 1823. The device upon this seal is Linncea borealis<br />

within a ring round which two snakes are twisted as supporters.<br />

Motto, " Dioscorides Secimdus." Above <strong>the</strong> ring is an open<br />

book, bearing on <strong>the</strong> dexter page <strong>the</strong> motto "ISunquam otiosus,"<br />

while on <strong>the</strong> sinister side <strong>the</strong> sun sheds its rays from <strong>the</strong> upper<br />

corner.<br />

The letter had been <strong>of</strong> late years in <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> a clergyman<br />
