5. Maurandia, sliowiug <strong>the</strong> circumnutation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stem and<br />

two young petioles twining round a stick.<br />

6. Crocvs : development <strong>of</strong> a bud and <strong>the</strong> opening and closing<br />

movements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> flower.<br />

7. Olivia : opening <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> flower-buds.<br />

8. Uippeastrum : growth <strong>of</strong> stamens and style and development<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stigma.<br />

9. A humble-bee fertilizing a Scabious flower.<br />

A discussion followed, in which Dr. Scott, Eev. T. E.. E. Stebbiug,<br />

Mr. E. M. Holmes, Mr. J. Hopkinson, and <strong>the</strong> President took<br />

part, Mrs. Scott replying to <strong>the</strong> questions put.<br />

Mr. EuPEET Vallextin, F.L.S., showed a series <strong>of</strong> thirty<br />

lantern-slides, from photographs taken by himself, <strong>of</strong> bird-life in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Falkland Islands :— (1) The Kelp Goose, Chloephaga antarctica,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> dissimilar coloration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two sexes, feeding on Porphyra<br />

vulgaris, a very abundant seaweed between tide-marks in<br />

those regions. (2) Phalacrocorax magellanicus and P. imperialis<br />

basking in <strong>the</strong> sun, and on <strong>the</strong>ir nests. (3) The Mollymauk,<br />

Diomedea clilororhynclia, which breeds on <strong>the</strong> outlying islands <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> group. (4) The Penguins whose headquarters seem to be<br />

<strong>the</strong>se islands, <strong>the</strong> Geutoo, Pygosceles tceniata, <strong>the</strong>ir nests being<br />

made on peaty soil, packed with twigs <strong>of</strong> Empetrum nigrum or<br />

Poa ccFspitosa, <strong>the</strong> Tussock Grass. (5) The Eockhopper Penguin,<br />

Eudyptes chi-ysocome, which assembles in <strong>the</strong> breeding-season by<br />

thousands in rookeries. Concerning this species, a series <strong>of</strong> rockspecimens<br />

were shown, some merely polished, o<strong>the</strong>rs deeply<br />

grooved, as if by <strong>the</strong> claws <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Penguins when walking up <strong>the</strong><br />

pathways to <strong>the</strong>ir rookerv.<br />

The President, <strong>the</strong> EeV. T. E. E. Stebbing, Mr. A. O. Walker,<br />

and Mr. A. D. Michael engaged in a discussion, and Mr. Valleutin<br />

replied.<br />
