In oceanography, tidal, ciUTent, meteorological, and magnetic<br />

observations were made wherever possible, and serial temperatures<br />

and water samples were secured down to 1000 fathoms. The<br />

charts were everywhere examined and corrected, and <strong>the</strong> existence<br />

<strong>of</strong> any shallow connecting bank between India and Madagascar<br />

was disproved. About 150 dredgings were run down to 900<br />

fathoms, and plankton was extensively collected by closing and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r nets down to 1200 fathoms. The reef faunas and floras<br />

were especially collected in <strong>the</strong> Chagos and at Coetivy in view <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> marine organisms, and <strong>the</strong> islands everywhere<br />

were carefully examined, <strong>the</strong>ir land animals and plants being<br />

collected as thoroughly as possible.<br />

The Peesidetnt announced that amongst <strong>the</strong> visitors who had<br />

been invited to attend, all <strong>the</strong> Trustees <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Percy Sladen Trusr,<br />

were present, and he invited <strong>the</strong>ir Chairman, Mr. T. Bailey Saunders,<br />

to open <strong>the</strong> discussion. He was followed by Dr. Tempest Anderson<br />

and Mr. Henry Bury ; discussion was contributed by Dr. Gr. C.<br />

Bourne, who contrasted his own difficulties when in Diego Garcia<br />

twenty-five years ago and <strong>the</strong> facihties at <strong>the</strong> disposal <strong>of</strong> Mr.<br />

Stanley Gardiuer, Dr. G. Herbert Fowler, Dr. N. Wolfenden,<br />

Mr. A. P. Young, Mr. W. P. Pycraft, <strong>the</strong> President concluding by<br />

a few observations, and Mr. Stanley Gardiner replied seriatim to<br />

<strong>the</strong> questions which had been put.<br />

Miss Nina Frances Layard, Mr. Frank Morey, and Mr.<br />

Arthur Ernest Bousfield Steains, were severally balloted for and<br />

elected Fellows.<br />

Dr. H. C. Basttan-, F.E.S., F.L.S., gave a lantern demonstration<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> developmental changes in Zoogloea, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong> following is<br />

tlie author's abstract :<br />

Masses <strong>of</strong> Zooglcea in <strong>the</strong>ir early stage were first shown, in which<br />

<strong>the</strong> constituent Bacteria were plainly recognizable. The growth <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> masses, <strong>the</strong>ir alteration in appearance and in reaction to staining<br />

fluids, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> progressive segmentation which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

undergo, were revealed by o<strong>the</strong>r specimens. Segmentation was<br />

shown to progress till minute spherical or ovoidal units were produced.<br />
