Jonx Chaeles Saaveii ^as elected FelloM' <strong>of</strong> this <strong>Society</strong> on<br />

<strong>the</strong> 21st April, 1881, and died at Brighton on 23rd August, 1904.<br />

He brought out a sinall vokinie entitled ' Rhodologia ; a discourse<br />

on Eoses and <strong>the</strong> odour <strong>of</strong> Eoses,' Brighton, 1894, and his various<br />

contributions to oiir knowledge <strong>of</strong> perfumes and perfume-bearing<br />

plants were issued in various journals. [B. 1). J.]<br />

Stephen William Silvee.—Among <strong>the</strong> Fellows whose deaths<br />

it is our melancholy duty to record is <strong>the</strong> late Mr. S. W. Silver,<br />

Avho passed away, after a brief illness, at his beautiful country<br />

seat at Letcomb Eegis, near Wantage, on April 7th, 1905.<br />

He had been confined to his house at York Gate, in <strong>London</strong>, by a<br />

severe cold for several weeks, but having apparently thrown it <strong>of</strong>f,<br />

he was permitted by his medical attendant to return to <strong>the</strong> Manor<br />

House, where he suffered a relapse to which he finally succumbed<br />

at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> eighty-five, having retained his energies and faculties<br />

unimpaired almost to <strong>the</strong> very last.<br />

The late Mr. Silver was a many-sided man, and for a long<br />

succession <strong>of</strong> years had taken an active part in many capacities.<br />

In 1846 he had succeeded to <strong>the</strong> management <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> export and<br />

banking business founded by his fa<strong>the</strong>r long before. This business<br />

brought him into touch with prominent men in all parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Empire. He took a special interest in <strong>the</strong> Colonies, and promoted<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir development by <strong>the</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> a series <strong>of</strong> Handbooks,<br />

AAhich became everywhere popular. He was, fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong><br />

proprietor for many years <strong>of</strong> a weekly newspaper called <strong>the</strong><br />

' Colonies and India.'<br />

He toolv an active personal interest in all movements <strong>of</strong> a<br />

philanthi'opic and charitable Icind. For some five-and-twenty<br />

years he was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British and Foreign Bible <strong>Society</strong>,<br />

and <strong>of</strong> late years served on <strong>the</strong> Council. His annual garden<br />

party at Letcomb Eegis in aid <strong>of</strong> this institution, A\hich was a<br />

recurrent event for many years, will not soon be forgotten by<br />

those who were privileged to be present. He was, for close on<br />

fifty years, a Fellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eoyal Geographical <strong>Society</strong>, and was<br />

over and over again elected to <strong>the</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> that body, where his<br />

business experience proved <strong>of</strong> great service. For some thirtythree<br />

years he was a Fellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Linnean</strong> <strong>Society</strong>, in whose<br />

operations he always manifested a very lively interest. He \\'as<br />

also an energetic member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eoyal Botanic <strong>Society</strong> and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Eoyal Colonial Institute.<br />

After giving up active business in <strong>the</strong> City, Mr. Silver continued<br />

to be Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> India-rubber and Telegraph Company,<br />

in which he had a considerable financial interest, <strong>the</strong> works<br />

<strong>of</strong> that Company being at Silvertown. He was a Deputy-<br />

Lieutenant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> <strong>London</strong>, a Past-Master <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ironmongers'<br />

Company, a Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>London</strong> Life Association, a<br />

Governor <strong>of</strong> St. Thomas's Hospital ; also <strong>of</strong> St. Bartholomew's<br />

and Bridewell Hospitals. He was always a friend to geographical
