<strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> to found a Prize for pr<strong>of</strong>iciency iu Geology and<br />

Mineralogy, eligible to those who have passed Part 1. <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Natural<br />

Science Tripos and not <strong>of</strong> more than ten Terms' standing.<br />

On Christmas Eve, 1901, he fell when returning home, suffering<br />

a compound fracture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> right thumb ; but <strong>the</strong> end was<br />

approaching,<br />

He preached<br />

though he died practically in harness to <strong>the</strong> last.<br />

on Sunday evening, 26th October, 1902, at St. Clements,<br />

and came home in apparent good health ; between one and<br />

two in <strong>the</strong> morning he complained <strong>of</strong> severe pain in <strong>the</strong> chest, but<br />

was relieved by some simple remedies, and he lay down to sleep<br />

again, during which he quietly passed away, without again waking,<br />

from angina pectoris.<br />

The writer has to thank Mr. E. W. Wiltshire, son <strong>of</strong> our<br />

deceased Fellow, for much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foregoing information.<br />

The Minutes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Anniversary Meeting, 25th May, were read<br />

and confirmed.<br />

Messrs. Edward Alexander Newell Arber, George Wallace<br />

Eustace, and Robert Alexander Robertson wei*e elected, and<br />

Mr. Montague Frank Hopson was admitted a Fellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Society</strong>.<br />

The Chairman announced that <strong>the</strong> President had appointed <strong>the</strong><br />

following to be Vice-Presidents for <strong>the</strong> ensuing year :—Mr. Frank<br />

Crisp, Mr. C. B. Clarke, Pr<strong>of</strong>. .1. B. Farmer, and Mr. A. O.<br />

AValker.<br />

Dr. HocKEX, F.L.S., <strong>of</strong> Diinedin, New Zealand, reminded <strong>the</strong><br />

Societv that <strong>the</strong> next biennial meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Australasian Association<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Advancement <strong>of</strong> Science will be held at Dunedin,<br />

in January 1904 ; and that <strong>the</strong> Members would welcome any<br />

Fellows <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Linnean</strong> <strong>Society</strong> who might be able to pay a visit<br />

to New Zealand on that occasion ; every facility for travelling at<br />

special rates to visit <strong>the</strong> celebrated scenery will be afforded by <strong>the</strong><br />

New Zealand Gov^ernment, and Dr. Hocken will be happy to give<br />

detailed information to prospective visitors.<br />

Mr. R. Morton Middleton, F.L.S., exhibited a holograph<br />

letter from Linnaeus to Philip Miller, dated Upsala, 3 August,<br />

1763, and read a translation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same. A few remarks were<br />

added by <strong>the</strong> General Secretary.<br />

Mr. Y. N. Williams, F.L.S., showed a series <strong>of</strong> 100 drawings<br />

<strong>of</strong> British CompositsD, 20 being Hieracia, drawn in pen-and-ink by<br />

Mr. E. AV. Hunnybun, <strong>of</strong> Huntingdon, an accomplished artist and<br />

British field-botanist.
