his fa<strong>the</strong>r, and on coming <strong>of</strong> age he found himself possessed <strong>of</strong><br />

sufficient means to enable him to pursue his studies unfettered by<br />

business claims on bis time. He was, however, nominally a shipbroker,<br />

and had an <strong>of</strong>fice in Fenchurch Street for some years.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Presidential Address to <strong>the</strong> Entomological <strong>Society</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>London</strong> in 1886, Mr. McLachlan gives a short autobiography <strong>of</strong><br />

his early hfe. He <strong>the</strong>re tells us that when a boy his natural<br />

history instincts embraced " <strong>the</strong> whole Systema Naturae." Land<br />

and fresln\ater shells, and butterflies and moths, seem to have<br />

been his chief zoological fancies, but above <strong>the</strong>se botany appears<br />

to have dominated. In 1855 he went for a voyage to ISew South<br />

AVales and Shanghai, and on this tour be amassed a considerable<br />

herbarium, <strong>the</strong> species <strong>of</strong> which were subsequently named "with<br />

<strong>the</strong> assistance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Kobert Brown. Soon after his return<br />

he must have commenced his entomological studies, <strong>the</strong> earliest <strong>of</strong><br />

which he devoted to Lepidoptera, as he published a paper on<br />

Acentropus in <strong>the</strong> ' Entomologist's Weekly Intelligencer,' in 1861,<br />

In <strong>the</strong> same year he published his first Neuropterous paper in <strong>the</strong><br />

' Entomologist's Annual,' and from that time his papers on Lepi-<br />

doptera and Neuroptera became numerous. The latter subject,<br />

however, soon occupied all his time. His chief work, ' A<br />

Mono-<br />

graphic Revision and Synopsis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Trichoptera <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> European<br />

Eauna,' a thick volume with supplements altoge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> 626 pages,<br />

with 59 plates <strong>of</strong> structural detail, Mas completed in 1880. His<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r numerous writings are scattered throughout <strong>the</strong> Entomo-<br />

logical literature <strong>of</strong> his time, several <strong>of</strong> his papers appearing in<br />

<strong>the</strong> ' Journal' <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Linnean</strong> <strong>Society</strong> between <strong>the</strong> years 1871 and<br />

1892.<br />

Mr. McLachlan became a Eellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Entomological <strong>Society</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>London</strong> in 1858, and was President in 1885 and 1886, Secretary<br />

from 1868-72, and twice Treasurer ; <strong>the</strong> latter <strong>of</strong>fice he held at<br />

his death. He was elected a Fellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Linnean</strong> <strong>Society</strong> in 1862,<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eoyal <strong>Society</strong> in 1877, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Zoological <strong>Society</strong> in 1881,<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eojal Horticultural <strong>Society</strong> in 1888 ; he was also on <strong>the</strong><br />

Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eay <strong>Society</strong>.<br />

He Avas an honorary member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Entomological Societies <strong>of</strong><br />

Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Switzerland, <strong>the</strong> Societe Imperiale des<br />

Amis des Sciences Naturelles, Moscow, <strong>the</strong> Societas pro Fauna et<br />

Flora Fennica <strong>of</strong> Helsingfors, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> New Zealand Institute, <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> South <strong>London</strong> Entomological and Natural History <strong>Society</strong>,<br />

and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Natural History <strong>Society</strong> <strong>of</strong> Glasgow.<br />

Carl Eduaed yon Martens was born at Stuttgart on April 18tb,<br />

1831. His fa<strong>the</strong>r held <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> Councillor in <strong>the</strong> Wiirtemburg<br />

Civil Service, but is better known as <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> a<br />

classical work, ' Eeise in Italieu,' and as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earliest and<br />

most successful explorers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fauna and Flora <strong>of</strong> that South<br />

German State. Young Martens was an only son and <strong>the</strong> devoted
