History <strong>Society</strong>, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yorkshire Philosophical <strong>Society</strong>, and <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Essex Natural History Field Club.<br />

Among <strong>the</strong> many pupils who passed through Howes's Laboratory<br />

and Lecture-room, and who have since won or are steadily on <strong>the</strong><br />

way towards winning scientific reputation, may be mentioned :<br />

Much might easily be written in appreciative comment on <strong>the</strong><br />

character, <strong>the</strong> writings, and <strong>the</strong> influence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lost friend who<br />

cherished <strong>the</strong> <strong>Linnean</strong> <strong>Society</strong> with so much earnestness <strong>of</strong> willing<br />

service. But <strong>the</strong> thoroughness which he threw into all his<br />

scientific undertakings has elicited so many tributes <strong>of</strong> honour to<br />

his memory, that it becomes expedient to avoid repetition even in<br />

eulogium. The simple outline <strong>of</strong> his career and work that has<br />

here been given should prove to <strong>the</strong> most critical that he was a<br />
