magnified field, this being attained by a secondary stage and objective<br />

at right-angles to <strong>the</strong> primary instrument, <strong>the</strong> rays being transmitted<br />

up <strong>the</strong> body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> microscope through a right-angled prism, and<br />

clearness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two images preserved by means <strong>of</strong> a diaphragm<br />

placed longitudinally in <strong>the</strong> microscope-tube.<br />

A discussion followed in which Dr. W. G. Eidewood, Dr. D. H.<br />

Scott, Rev. T. E, E. Htebbing, and <strong>the</strong> President joined. Criticism<br />

was cliiefly directed to <strong>the</strong> hybrid term for <strong>the</strong> invention, and<br />

" Synoptoscope " or " Syn<strong>the</strong>toscope " was suggested in its place.<br />

The Minutes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2ud March were<br />

read and confirmed.<br />

Miss Emily Mary Berridge and Mr. Frederick Hugh Capron<br />

wei'e admitted Fellows.<br />

Mr. Arthur James Dicks, B.Sc.Lond., and Mrs. Maude Muff<br />

were proposed as Fellows.<br />

Mr. Johannes Gossweiler and Miss Edith Eebecca Saunders<br />

were elected Fellows.<br />

The President announced that <strong>the</strong> Council had appointed a<br />

Committee to consider <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> Zoological Nomenclature<br />

discussed at <strong>the</strong> last meeting ; also, iu view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> interest displayed<br />

at a previous meeting on <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> fficology, a<br />

discussion had been arranged for <strong>the</strong> 4th May, to be opened by<br />

Mr. A. G. Tansley.<br />

Mrs. D. H. Scott, F.L.S., exhibited animated photographs <strong>of</strong><br />

plants taken by <strong>the</strong> kammatograph, showing <strong>the</strong> natural movements<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> plants accelerated so as to be readily followed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> eye.<br />

1 & 2. Sparmannia africana, showing <strong>the</strong> opening <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

flower-bud, <strong>the</strong> movements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stamens, and <strong>the</strong><br />

closing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> flowers at night.<br />

3. Sensitive plant, Mimosa pudica, showing <strong>the</strong> movements<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leaves on stimulation.
