Lieut.-Col. Leonard Howard Lotd Irby was born in 1836,<br />

and received his education at Eugby, and at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 18 he<br />

joined <strong>the</strong> 90th Light Infantry, and with it proceeded to <strong>the</strong><br />

Crimea, <strong>the</strong>re serving till <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> Sebastopol. He published<br />

his notes on Crimean birds observed at <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>atre <strong>of</strong> war in <strong>the</strong><br />

' Zoologist ' for 1857, but he was in India at <strong>the</strong> outbreak <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Mutiny and, with <strong>the</strong> present Lord Wolseley <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same regiment,<br />

took part in <strong>the</strong> relief <strong>of</strong> Lucknow. In 1867 Irby was transferred<br />

to <strong>the</strong> 74th Highlanders, retiring from <strong>the</strong> service about eight<br />

years later.<br />

In 1861 he published in <strong>the</strong> ' Ibis' his "Notes on Birds observed<br />

in Oudli and Kumaon." Birds were his favourite but not exclu-<br />

sive study, and in 1875 he produced his ' Ornithology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Straits<br />

<strong>of</strong> Gibraltar,' from materials acquired during his frequent visits<br />

to Spain aTid <strong>the</strong> opposite coast; a second edition came out<br />

in 1895, containing an account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lepidoptera <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

region. His o<strong>the</strong>r principal book appeared in 1887 as ' British<br />

Birds : Key-list,' in four years reaching a second edition. He<br />

joined <strong>the</strong> Zoological <strong>Society</strong> in 1873, and for many years served<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> that body ; our own <strong>Society</strong> he joined on<br />

21st June, 1888. He took much interest in <strong>the</strong> setting up <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

life groups <strong>of</strong> birds at <strong>the</strong> British Museum, Cromwell Eoad, in<br />

some measure furnishing <strong>the</strong> material by his own skill in shooting.<br />

He died on <strong>the</strong> 14th May, 1905, soon after his return from<br />

Malaga, where he had passed <strong>the</strong> winter in familiar and delightful<br />

Sir Hugh Low was born 10th May, 1824, and died at Alassio on<br />

18th April, in <strong>the</strong> present year. After an education at private<br />

schools he obtained an appointment in <strong>the</strong> Hon. East India<br />

Company's service. But on his way to take this up, he became<br />

acquainted with Mr. (afterwards Sir) James Brooke, and <strong>the</strong><br />

intimate friendship between <strong>the</strong>m which resulted, diverted <strong>the</strong>
