DEFINITION<br />

Rehabilitation <strong>is</strong> a process 2-10 compr<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g a range of goal-oriented activities 2 provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

opportunities 6 to achieve and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> 11 2, 6, 12, 8, 13 and<br />

an optimal level of <strong>in</strong>dependence<br />

function<strong>in</strong>g {, 1997 #107<br />

for <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>with</strong> impaired body structures or functions related to the<br />

musculoskeletal and/or the neurological system caus<strong>in</strong>g activity limitations and/or<br />

participation restrictions, consider<strong>in</strong>g the relevant contextual factors (personal and<br />

environmental) 2, 14 for whom there <strong>is</strong> a reasonable expectation of functional ga<strong>in</strong> and/or<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> quality of life.<br />

Rehabilitation compr<strong>is</strong>es four core phases 5 :<br />

• Identification of the <strong>in</strong>dividual’s needs, preferences and capabilities by use<br />

of a recogn<strong>is</strong>ed functional assessment measure 15 ;<br />

• Collaborative goal sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> partnership <strong>with</strong> the patient or h<strong>is</strong>/her<br />

advocates and the team members, focused on the restoration of function<br />

as well as prevention of activity limitations and participation restrictions,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>dicative time frame 15 ;<br />

• Evidence based activities <strong>with</strong> proven added value to achieve the<br />

predef<strong>in</strong>ed goals;<br />

• Assessment of the progress aga<strong>in</strong>st the agreed goals by means of the<br />

functional assessment measure used <strong>in</strong> step 1) and def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the necessity<br />

to reiterate the rehabilitation cycle.<br />

Different types of professionals can be <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the performance of the rehabilitation<br />

process. Professionals must have accredited skills and expert<strong>is</strong>e, appropriate as related to<br />

the required <strong>in</strong>terventions <strong>in</strong> order to achieve the predef<strong>in</strong>ed goals.<br />

Rehabilitation services are provided <strong>in</strong> a special<strong>is</strong>t rehabilitation organ<strong>is</strong>ation 15 accredited<br />

as such by a recogn<strong>is</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>stance. <strong>The</strong> most appropriate rehabilitation organ<strong>is</strong>ation <strong>is</strong><br />

determ<strong>in</strong>ed by criteria <strong>in</strong>herent to the <strong>in</strong>dividual’s character<strong>is</strong>tics, the complexity of the<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals’ needs and goals, the different professionals <strong>in</strong>volved and the <strong>in</strong>frastructure and<br />

equipment required for the activities. 16 A rehabilitation organ<strong>is</strong>ation <strong>is</strong> part of a network<br />

which meets the demand for rehabilitation at all levels of special<strong>is</strong>ation and <strong>in</strong> all phases of<br />

the process.<br />
