possible comb<strong>in</strong>ations has its advantages and d<strong>is</strong>advantages. Figure 5.1 shows that, at the<br />

microlevel, fixed payment systems are not compatible <strong>with</strong> retrospective reimbursement<br />

(but only <strong>with</strong> prospective reimbursement). Variable payment systems can be applied both<br />

<strong>in</strong> retro- and <strong>in</strong> prospective ways. A <strong>summary</strong> of the possible comb<strong>in</strong>ations and their ma<strong>in</strong><br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>in</strong>centives <strong>is</strong> presented <strong>in</strong> Figure 5.2.<br />
