PREVALENCE<br />

Belgian data on stroke prevalence were obta<strong>in</strong>ed via a recent review us<strong>in</strong>g the structure of<br />

WHO’s stroke component of the WHO InfoBase. Studies on stroke epidemiology<br />

publ<strong>is</strong>hed <strong>in</strong> peer-reviewed journals were analysed. It concerned 44 <strong>in</strong>cidence studies and<br />

12 prevalence studies. See Figure 2.5. 31<br />

Internationally, large differences <strong>in</strong> prevalence data of stroke appeared. In one publication<br />

the prevalence of stroke was estimated at 750 per 100 000 43 . In another publication the<br />

prevalence was estimated about 100 per 100 000 44 what <strong>is</strong> probably an underestimation<br />

<strong>in</strong> compar<strong>is</strong>on <strong>with</strong> the <strong>in</strong>cidence data.<br />

MEAN AGE AND MORTALITY<br />

<strong>The</strong> mean age at onset for males <strong>is</strong> 63.3 years, for females 71.4 years 36 . Yearly stroke<br />

45, 33 , 41 ,<br />

mortality ranges at 28 days from 15.9% to 33% and at 1 year from 26.3% to 37.3%<br />

35 .<br />

2.2.2.2 Total Hip Replacement<br />

INCIDENCE<br />

<strong>The</strong> crude <strong>in</strong>cidence of total hip replacement <strong>in</strong> Belgium was about 160 per 100 000<br />

<strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>in</strong> 2004 46 .<br />

Internationally, the crude <strong>in</strong>cidence of total hip replacement ranges from 58 to 126 per<br />

100 000 47, 48 .<br />

Age standardized <strong>in</strong>cidence of total hip replacement (primary and rev<strong>is</strong>ion) ranges from<br />

112 to 113 per 100 000 49 . Age standardized <strong>in</strong>cidence of primary hip replacement show a<br />

higher <strong>in</strong>cidence for females (87.1 per 100 000) then for males (65.5 per 100 000 50 . <strong>The</strong><br />

same counts for the hip rev<strong>is</strong>ions (females: 21.0 per 100 000; Males: 16.6 per 100 000) 51 .<br />

Age and gender standard<strong>is</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>cidence of primary hip replacement ranges from 134 to<br />

193 per 100 000, of rev<strong>is</strong>ions from 21.1 to 43 per 100 000 52 , 53 .<br />

In 2004, 16 599 THR were reg<strong>is</strong>tered <strong>in</strong> Belgium 46 .<br />

PREVALENCE<br />

An estimation of the prevalence of hip d<strong>is</strong>ease severe enough to require surgery was 1520<br />

per 100 000 aged 35-85 54<br />

MEAN AGE AND MORTALITY<br />
