6.3.1 Red Hat Kickstart Red Hat provides a utility called redhat-config-kickstart to assist with the creation of Kickstart files. When you launch this utility, you see the Kickstart Configurator window (Figure 6-5). Figure 6-5 redhat-config-kickstart main window The separate sections of this application allow you to specify different attributes of the installation. ► Basic Configuration You can configure language support, keyboard, mouse, and root password here. You may also specify whether you prefer a text installation instead of a graphical installation. Lastly you may choose if the system should reboot after the automated installation is complete. ► Installation Method You can choose an upgrade or clean installation here. You can also specify the source of the installation (NFS, HTTP, CDROM, etc.) here. ► Boot Loader Options Select the type of bootloader (GRUB or LILO) along with any relevant options from here. You may also specify kernel parameters from this window. ► Partition Information You specify the partition size and type information here. You also specify the action to take with existing partitions and new disks. ► Network Configuration Define population network information, such as IP, DNS, and routers, from here. ► Authentication You may configure NIS, Keberos, and other authentication server options here. You may also specify local password encryption and security. ► Firewall Configuration Configure iptables rules from here. ► Xconfiguration Select the video card, resolution, monitor, and window manager here. ► Package Selection Select which programs are installed on the system here. ► Pre-Installation Script Identify the commands to run before the installation. ► Post-Installation Script Identify the commands to run after the installation. When all your options are specified, save the file. This automatically checks for any missing options. If everything is correct, you may now use the ks.cfg file in an unattended installation. Tip: We found that the redhat-config-kickstart program, by default, places a skipx parameter in the ks.cfg file. We had to comment out this prior to using ks.cfg.
