Note: The IBM 4-Port Gb Ethernet Switch Module for BladeCenter may be installed in your BladeCenter unit and you must replace the CD-ROM media tray in your BladeCenter unit. CISCO Systems Intelligent Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module The CISCO Systems Intelligent Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module (IGESM) is a layer 2-3 LAN switch that provides four external 10/100/1000BaseT interfaces for connecting to LANs external to the BladeCenter chassis. Internally the switch module is designed to connect to a single Gigabit Ethernet interface on each installed single width blade server, or two such interfaces on each installed double-width blade server. The IGESM is also connected via a Fast Ethernet interface to each installed Management Module. This is used to remotely access the switch module via the Management Module’s 10/100BaseT Ethernet interface. You can use this capability to support initial configuration and management of the switch module. The IGESM uses CISCO IOS. Use the IGESM when you require the advanced functionality of CISCO IOS or maximum compatibility with external networks that constructed using switches running CISCO IOS. Note: To use the SoL remote text console function with the IGESM, you must manually create the required VLAN using the procedures in the CISCO Systems Intelligent Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module - Installation Guide. Nortel Networks Layer 2-7 Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module The Nortel Networks Layer 2-7 Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module is a layer 2-7 LAN switch that provides four external 10/100/1000BaseT interfaces for connecting to LANs external to the BladeCenter chassis. You can use this capability to support initial configuration and management of the switch module. The 2-Port Fibre Channel Switch Module can be installed only in I/O module bays 3 or 4. If you install a 2-Port Fibre Channel Switch Module, any blade servers that have expansion cards must use a Fibre Channel expansion card. Brocade Enterprise SAN Switch Module The Brocade Enterprise SAN Switch Module is a Fibre Channel SAN switch that provides two external 1 Gbps or 2 Gbps (autosense) Fibre Channel interfaces for connecting to SANs external to the BladeCenter chassis. Internally the switch module is designed to connect to a single 2 Gbps Fibre Channel interface on each installed blade server that is equipped with a Fibre Channel expansion card. The Brocade Enterprise SAN Switch Module is also connected via a Fast Ethernet interface to each installed Management Module. This is used to remotely access the switch module via the Management Module’s 10/100BaseT Ethernet interface.
