5.1 Management Module configuration<br />

This section describes the steps to set up the <strong>BladeCenter</strong> Management Module<br />

so that you can work with <strong>BladeCenter</strong> <strong>JS20</strong>s. Advanced configuration of the<br />

Management Module is beyond the scope of this book.<br />

<strong>The</strong> primary setup task for the Management Module is to assign IP addresses,<br />

which are necessary to communicate with the Management Module Web and<br />

command line interfaces. To learn more about selecting these IP addresses, see<br />

Chapter 4, “Planning considerations” on page 53.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Management Module has two network interfaces, an external interface<br />

(eth0) and an internal interface (eth1). <strong>The</strong> external interface is accessible via the<br />

10/100BaseT connector on the Management Module. <strong>The</strong> internal interface is<br />

connected to the management interfaces of all the installed I/O modules that<br />

support such interfaces. This includes all switch I/O modules.<br />

<strong>The</strong> default behavior of a new Management Module is to request an IP address<br />

for the external interface via DHCP. If the Management Module does not receive<br />

a valid response from a DHCP server within two minutes of powering on, it uses<br />

a default static IP address of 192.168.70.125 with the default subnet mask of<br />

255.255.255.0.<br />

Note: <strong>The</strong> default host name is MMxxxxxxxxxxxx, where xxxxxxxxxxxx is the<br />

burned-in medium access control (MAC) address.<br />

<strong>The</strong> default IP address for the internal interface is statically assigned to be<br />

192.168.70.126 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.<br />

You can reset the IP addresses of a Management Module that was previously<br />

configured back to the factory defaults by using the IP reset button shown in<br />

Figure 5-1 on the Management Module. You can find the procedure for doing this<br />

in the <strong>IBM</strong> Eserver <strong>BladeCenter</strong> Management Module User’s Guide.<br />
