Figure 2-4 KVM Management Module The Management Module provides the following three major functions: ► Console switching and remote graphical console for blade servers that use a keyboard, video monitor, and mouse (KVM) for their console ► Serial over local area network (LAN) (SoL) remote text consoles for blade servers that support SoL consoles (includes the BladeCenter JS20) ► Service processor for the entire BladeCenter Important: The console switching and remote graphical console functionality of the Management Module is not used by the BladeCenter JS20 because it does not support KVM consoles. You can still use the console switching and remote graphical console functions if you have other blade servers installed in the same BladeCenter chassis that support KVM consoles. You use the service processor functionality of the Management Module to perform many different tasks to: ► Initially configure BladeCenter ► Define and manage the users who can remotely access the Management Module ► Monitor the BladeCenter and reporting abnormal conditions to system managers either via e-mail or Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) events sent to management systems ► Remotely power on and off individual blade servers and I/O modules 14 The IBM Eserver BladeCenter JS20
► Remotely switch the CD-ROM, diskette, and USB interfaces in the media bay of the BladeCenter chassis to a particular blade server ► Maintain the firmware embedded in various BladeCenter components The Management Module is connected to each blade server and I/O module via management buses embedded in the BladeCenter chassis midplanes. The Management Module uses these connections to provide service processor functionality in conjunction with the Blade Systems Management Processor (BSMP) on each blade server. When using the SoL remote text console function, the Management Module also uses a virtual LAN (VLAN) provided by the LAN switch module installed in I/O module bay 1 to communicate with each blade server. This VLAN is not accessible externally. Each Management Module is equipped with several connectors, as illustrated in Figure 2-5. Figure 2-5 Management Module connectors Chapter 2.
