Chapter 7. Installing AIX on the JS20
7
This chapter discusses NIM. It explains how to configure NIM to install AIX and
how to install AIX on an IBM Eserver BladeCenter JS20 using NIM.
BladeCenter JS20 supports the installation of AIX 5.2f and later. We recommend
that you install AIX using a network installation via NIM. NIM is a unified console
that allows the management of several AIX logical partitions (LPARs) or
machines. You may install AIX on new machines or manage existing ones from a
unified interface.
Tip: Prior to installing any operating system, we recommend that you upgrade
all firmware to the latest level. See 5.4, “Firmware” on page 79, for instructions
about how to complete this task.
To use NIM, there should be an available AIX instance with NIM configured on
the same network segment as the BladeCenter. In the interest of speed and
security, a private dedicated subnet is recommended.
Our NIM master was configured on a pSeries 690 connected to the same local
area network (LAN) as the BladeCenter. This p690 was running the same level of
AIX that we installed on the BladeCenter JS20.
Note: An installation of AIX may be several gigabytes in size. We recommend
that you use a 100 Mb or faster network for NIM-based installations.
