and test standards that were used to evaluate the pressure and impact resistance. Without a label, ascertaining<br />

whether a window or shutter has sufcient strength to meet pressure and wind-borne debris loads is difcult<br />

(see Figure 11-12). It is therefore recommended that design professionals specify that windows and shutters<br />

have permanently mounted labels that contain the type of information shown in Figure 11-11.<br />

Glazing Protection from Tile Debris<br />

Residential glazing in wind-borne debris regions is required to<br />

resist the test missile C or D, depending on the basic wind<br />

speed. However, feld investigations have shown that roof tile<br />

can penetrate shutters that comply with test missile D (see<br />

Figure 11-13). Laboratory research conducted at the University<br />

of Florida indicates that test missile D compliant shutters do<br />

not provide adequate protection against tile debris (Fernandez<br />

et al. 2010). Accordingly, if tile roofs occur within 100 to 200<br />

feet (depending on basic wind speed), it is recommended that<br />

shutters complying with test missile E be specifed.<br />
