Siding<br />

A key to the successful performance of siding<br />

and panel systems is attachment with a sufcient<br />

number of proper fasteners (based on design loads<br />

and tested resistance) that are correctly located.<br />

Fact Sheet 5.3, Siding Installation and Connectors,<br />

in <strong>FEMA</strong> P-499 provides guidance on specifying<br />

and installing vinyl, wood siding, and fber<br />

cement siding in high-wind regions.<br />

Brick Veneer<br />

COASTAL CONSTRUCTION MANUAL<br />

In areas that experience frequent wind-driven<br />

rain and in areas that are susceptible to high<br />

winds, a pressure-equalized rain screen design<br />

should be considered when specifying wood<br />

or fber cement siding. A rain screen design<br />

is accomplished by installing suitable vertical<br />

furring strips between the moisture barrier<br />

and siding material. The cavity facilitates<br />

drainage of water from the space between the<br />

moisture barrier and backside of the siding and<br />

facilitates drying of the siding and moisture<br />

barrier.<br />

Blow-of of brick veneer has occurred often during high winds. Common failure modes include tie (anchor<br />

corrosion), tie fastener pull-out, failure of masons to embed ties into the mortar, and poor bonding between<br />

ties and mortar, and poor-quality mortar. Four of these failure modes occurred at the house shown in Figure<br />

11-17. Te lower bricks were attached to CMU and the upper bricks were attached to wood studs. In addition<br />

to the wall covering damage, roof sheathing was blown of along the eave.<br />
